So, I got so excited about the trailer that I went and bought a copy of the collected series and re-read it in anticipation. So rad. So good. I remember checking it out from the Herrick Public Library about 28 times and thinking it was rad because they sometimes said "shit" and Dr. Manhattan had a flaccid blue dick. When you're 11, that's pretty rad for a comic book. In all seriousness, though, Watchmen was a great, even intellectual accomplishment in a medium that is generally driven only by the pseudo-masculine fantasies of involuntarily celibant pizza-eating 25-year-old manchildren. Even most of the celebrated graphic-novels and comic series' are little more than illustrated violence orgies fabricated by sniveling white nerds who live in a state of self-doubt and fear - employing muscle-bound ulra-humans and their half-nude, sexy cohorts to vicariously live out a desire to accomplish something important. Watchmen gave the genre the kick in the ass it deserved in 1985 by placing supposed Super Heroes in a real-world setting and humanizing them with desire, pride, failure, doubt, sex, regret, resentment, etc., all while reflecting on the social and political hypertension of the cold-war 1980s (presuming history had been changed somewhat by the intervention of costumed heroes in the 1960s). I look eagerly forward to the Watchmen film, and hope dearly that it somehow manages to capture the originality and sharpness of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' original.
ReplyDeleteI need to read these things before hiting "post comment." Seriously - someone give me an synonym for "rad." Yeesh. Replace "rad" with "maverick," and the first few sentences of that rant would read like a Sarah Palin speech.
ReplyDeleteAhhh yes. I think we wore out the Herrick Public Library's copy...that and Cynical Man...which Matt Feazel sent me a hand drawn image just for me a few months ago! I just pray that this movie does not turn one of the greatest pieces of literature in my life to another Dulf Lundgren Punisher movie.
